At end of this article: Listen to Charles Harvey's call to 911.

Fifty-four-year-old Charles Harvey of Rossville was shot and killed in a “suicide by cop scenario” Monday evening, Aug. 9, in the parking lot of the East Ridge (Tenn.) Fire and Police Service Center, police said.

Harvey called the 911 center in East Ridge about 6:11 p.m. Monday, telling authorities he had a “serious problem” and that he was outside in the parking lot, according to officer Erik Hopkins of the East Ridge Police Depart-ment.

Officers stepped outside and pleaded with Harvey not to reach for the weapon he had in his belt, and that is could be handled a different way, Hopkins said.

Harvey told officers of his intentions to draw his weapon on them, leaving Lt. Clint Uselton and officer Sean Merriman no alternative but to shoot him as he reached for the gun, Hopkins said.

The encounter was over in a matter of a few minutes, he said.

Harvey was rushed to Erlanger hospital in Chattanooga, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The initial investigation concludes that Harvey’s action were an attempt to end his life in a “suicide by cop sce-nario,” according to officials.

A medical examiner will conduct an autopsy on Harvey Wednesday, Aug. 11, in Hamilton County, Tenn., accord-ing to Hopkins. The autopsy will also determine how many shots were fired in the incident, he said.

The weapon turned out to be a pellet gun, and Harvey has no previous arrest record in Hamilton County, accord-ing to Hopkins.

Uselton and Merriman will be on a five-day-paid leave, which is standard procedure for a shooting in the line of duty.

Harvey has no previous arrest history in Hamilton County.

Rossville Police Chief Sid Adams said Harvey had no arrest record where he lived, nor were there any records of any disturbance calls or suicide attempts involving Harvey.
