A ribbon-cutting was held at the new Keith Road fire station and gym on Wednesday, July 14, in Catoosa County.

The 10,000-square-foot fire station and gymnasium houses two-bedroom dormitories for volunteer firefighters, two bays for fire engines and a gym with a basketball court with striping for volleyball.

The total cost of the facility was approximately $658,000 and was paid for with 2004 special purpose local option sales tax (SPLOST) funds.

Catoosa County commission chairman Keith Greene said the fire station and gym will be an “important aspect” of fire services.

“(The Keith Road fire station) fits into our future plan of fire service in the community,” Greene said.

Chris Simpson, interim director for the Catoosa County recreation department, has previously said he hopes to move forward with a youth and adult basketball league associated with the gym.

He said he would also like to see a youth and/or adult volleyball league and, if possible, have the gym available at times for non-league community activities.

“I’d like to see all gyms in Catoosa open for a few hours a week for people not involved in athletic leagues,” Simpson said.

He said the gym will also be available for individuals to rent.

“The gymnasium aspect of the building should serve the community in Keith with great opportunities for recreation,” Simpson said.

What good is a un-manned new station? The gym will be more useful!

Keith deserves the new station. However Mr. Greene, what is the future plan of the fire service in Catoosa County? Please feel free to contact Post Fire with any suggestions....
