New faces and old rivals highlight the football schedules for Walker County’s high school football teams for the 2006 season.

With the GHSA pushing back the start of the practice until Aug. 1, teams will not kick off the season until Sept. 1.

Walker’s three teams will all do so at home. Gordon Lee begins the Kevin McElhany era with Model. LaFayette, under second-year head coach Tommy Welch, will renew acquaintances with old rival Trion while Mark Mariakis, the dean of football head coaches in the county, opens his third season at Ridgeland with visiting Armuchee.

There will be two head-to-head meeting involving county foes. Gordon Lee will play at Ridgeland on Sept. 8 and LaFayette will travel to Rossville on Sept. 29. Gordon Lee and LaFayette will not play each other this season.

With Temple moving up in classification to the newly-formed Region 7-AA, and Mount Zion, Carroll electing not to play a region schedule this year after moving to Region 6-A, Gordon Lee will play just three region games and are already assured of a state playoff berth.

The Trojans will play seven straight non-region opponents to start the year, then have a bye week before the region fray begins.

The rest of Gordon Lee’s non-region slate includes a home date with Ringgold and new Class AAAA school South Paulding, coached by former East Paulding head coach Tim Glanton. The Trojans will also play road games at three Class AA schools: Creekview, Dade County and North Oconee.

Gordon Lee opens 6-A play at Bowdon on Oct. 27, following by season-ending home dates with Bremen and traditional rival Trion.

Ridgeland will be part of a new-look Region 7-AAAA, which has just eight teams. The Panthers have six home games this season, but all four road games are against region opponents.

The Panthers will get Northwest Whitfield, Southeast Whitfield and Gordon Central at home in region play, but must travel to Ringgold and Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe before finishing the season with a brutal two-game stretch at region favorites Rome and at Dalton.

LaFayette will also be a part of the new-look Region 7-AA, which will be sub-divided this year with the top two teams in each division advancing to the state playoffs.

The Ramblers will follow up their season-opener with Trion by hosting Ringgold on Sept. 8. They will play two sub-region crossover games at Armuchee and at home against Pepperell. Those games will count in the region standings.

LaFayette finishes its season with five straight weeks of sub-region games. They will get Chattooga and Dade County at home, but must travel to Adairsville and Sonoraville before ending the year at Calhoun.
