Rossville teen Lauren Alaina and the other remaining six contestants on Fox’s hit reality show “American Idol” will take to the stage tonight as they look to wow the country with performances of “Songs from the 21st Century.”

Last week, a male — Paul McDonald — was eliminated from the competition. It was the first time a male has been voted off since the top 13 contestants. “It’s okay,” McDonald said after receiving the news. “It’s been a good ride.”

Alaina, a 16-year-old Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School cheerleader, last week continued her string of solid performances and further cemented her place in the competition with a strong rendition of Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb” from “Hannah Montana: The Movie.”

The song choice proved to be savvy one, considering the popularity of Cyrus and its appeal to large number of tweens and teens who are regular “Idol” voters.

“I picked this song because it’s about a young girl struggling to reach her dreams,” Alaina explained during last Wednesday’s show. “This song is perfect for what I’m doing right now... Everything about the song just screams ‘Idol.’”

With so many songs having been released this century (the past 11 years), it’s difficult to predict what Alaina might serenade viewers with tonight. But fans can tune in at 8 p.m. on Fox to find out.
