Gernie Lewis Crane, 67, Trenton

Gernie Lewis Crane of Trenton died Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011. He was 67.

He was born in Madison, Wisc., to the late Gernie and Lucy Crane. Gernie served in the U.S. Army, and later retired from the National Parks Service after 10 years of service. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 106, and a member of Trenton First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his loving wife of 24 years, Elaine Crane of Trenton; children, Nick Crane of East Ridge, Lana Crane of South Pittsburg and Ellen Crane of Trenton; siblings, Eldon Crane of Ider, Ala., Rosemary Crane of Trenton and Ronne Crane of Rossville; grandchildren, Stephon, Logan, Erin and Sara, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service: Friday, Dec. 2, at 1 p.m. in the chapel with Revs. Eddie Cantrell and Dewayne Roberson officiating. Burial: Chattanooga National Cemetery with honors. Bob E. Brown, 74, Fort Oglethorpe

Bob E. Brown of Fort Oglethorpe died Friday, Nov. 18, 2011 in a local hospital. He was 74. He was a native and lifelong resident of Chattanooga and north Georgia, he was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict and he attended the Chattanooga Citadel Corp of the Salvation Army. He was retired from Kayo Oil Company with more than 35 years of service and was preceded in death by his parents, William T. and Nora Myers Brown; four sisters and three brothers.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Faye Brown; daughter and son-in-law, Devona and Ricky Swafford of Ringgold; grandchildren, Josh Swafford and Brittany(Josh) Black; great-granddaughter, Emma Grace Black; brother, Bill Brown of Chattanooga; several nieces and nephews.

Rebecca Wooten Boyle, 30, Fort Oglethorpe

Rebecca Wooten Boyle of Ft. Oglethorpe died Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2011 in Sumter, South Carolina. She was 30.

She was a graduate of Lakeview-Ft. Oglethorpe High School and was employed by Burger King for many years. She attended Grace Baptist Church and Moriah Baptist Church.

Survivors include her sons, David, Scott, and Michael Boyle, all of Sumter, S.C.; parents, Kevin Wooten, Sr., and Barbara Wooten of Ft. Oglethorpe; ex-husband, Nick Boyle; brothers, Kevin (Melina) Wooten, Jr, and Christopher Wooten of Ft. Oglethorpe; niece, Amaya Wooten; grandmother, Ruth Wooten; aunts and many friends are left to cherish Rebecca’s memory.

Funeral services: Saturday, Nov. 19 at 2 p.m. at Moriah Baptist Church with Rev. Randy Lynn and Rev. Jay Walthour officiating. Burial information will be announced at a later date. Jerrie Clinton, 64, Chattanooga

Jerrie Clinton of Chattanooga, Tenn. died Friday, Nov. 18, 2011. She was 64.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Woodrow, Sarah Parris Clinton; sister, June Chastain.

Madeline Grant Cain, 90, Ringgold

Madeline Grant Cain of Ringgold died Nov. 18, 2011. She was 90. She was a lifelong resident of the Ringgold area, she was a former employee of M&J Supermarket and was a lifelong member of Catoosa Baptist Tabernacle. She is preceded in death by her husband, William “Billy” Cain; parents, William Fred and Maude Florence Ross Grant; and two brothers, Richard and Warren F. Grant.

Survivors include her seven children, Deborah Haddock (Donald) of Ringgold, and Maudiena Crumley of Ooltewah, Tenn., Jimmy Cain (Brenda), Barbara Davis (Richard), Sandra Pitts and Brenda Elliott (Ray), all of Ringgold, and Debbie Martin (Marvin) of Rossville; two brothers, R.C. Grant of Ringgold, and J.B. Grant of Bossier City, La.; 19 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; one great great grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

Phyllis Marie Card, 72, Chattanooga, Tenn.

Phyllis Marie Card of Chattanooga died Nov. 18, 2011 at a local health care facility. She was 72. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, and was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Frank and Gladys Atkins and brother, Hobert Atkins.

Survivors include her husband, C. Estelle Mae Graham, 86, Sale Creek, Tenn.

Estelle Mae Graham of Sale Creek, Tenn. died Monday, Nov. 14, 2011, after struggling for many years with Alzheimer’s disease. She was 86.

She was born in Ala., where she had lived most of her life, but had also lived in the Rossville area for more than 33 years and was a member of Midway Baptist Church. She was a former employee of Gateway Hosiery Mill for more than 32 years, but had spent the last years of her life at the Health Center at Standifer Place in Chattanooga. She was a very caring person, her kids and grandkids meant everything to her and she was known for being a very strong willed person who loved life and her many animals. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, who was greatly loved and will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Newt and Nellie Holcomb; daughter, Judy Thompson; son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Linda Graham; three brothers, James, Jake and Wayne Holcomb and a sister, Sadie Shaw.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and Bill Hester of Valley Head, Ala.; son, Harlon Graham of Sale Creek, Tenn.; sisters, Sarah Thompson, Adele Phillips, Jane Thomason and Sue Sexton; several grandchildren, great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Tommy Lloyd Gothard, 66, Rossville

Tommy Lloyd Gothard of Rossville died Friday, Nov. 18, 2011 in a local hospital from injuries received in an accident. He was 66. He was a native and lifelong resident of the north Georgia area and was employed in the textile industry for many years. He was a member of Harbor of Faith Church of God and was preceded in death by his parents, Bonnie Reece and Mary Edith Gothard; first wife, Frances Gothard; son, Ronald Taylor; daughter, Sheila Peters, and sisters, Bonnie O’Neal, Jo Gannaway, Bobbie Bledsoe, and Sue Whaley.

Survivors include his daughters, Annette Webb of Sneed, Ala. And Brenda Brown of Chattanooga; sons, Gerald Taylor of South Carolina, and Larry Taylor of Ohio; brothers, Lewis Gothard of Ringgold, and Larry Gothard of Rock Spring; sister, Dean Hardy of Rock Spring; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; special friend, Sharon Holbert.

James Edwin Greer, 79, East Ridge, Tenn.

James Edwin “Jim” Greer of East Ridge, Tenn. died Thursday, Nov. 17, 2011 following a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 79. He was born in 1032 to Dalton and Wilma Greer. He was a self-employed insurance agent for more than 45 years and proudly served his country with the 136th Infantry at Fort Benning. He was preceded in death by his sons, Steven and Gregory Greer; father, Dalton Greer; and sister, Betty Greer Miller.

Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Janice Montooth Greer; mother, Wilma Greer of East Ridge; sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Trish Greer, Derrick and Shawn Greer; son, Tommy Greer; daughter Candice Greer; grandchildren, Christopher, Marisa and Aaden Greer; great-grandchildren, Destiny and Katie Greer; brothers and sisters, Billie Greer Friddell, Peggy Greer Talley, Martha Greer and Earl Greer; numerous nieces and nephews.

Ralph Fred Hardin, 80

Ralph Fred Hardin died Monday, Nov. 21, 2011, surrounded by his family. He was 80.

He was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga and north Georgia area and was of the Christian faith. He was a wonderful loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Ralph was a Veteran of the U.S. Army serving during Korean Conflict. Mr. Hardin was retired from the Chattanooga Public School Transportation Department after 28 years of service. He was an avid antique knife collector and enjoyed playing his collection of guitars.

Robbie Lynne Hayes of Chickamauga died Thursday, Nov. 17, 2011. She was 49.

She was a lifelong resident of Walker County and a proud member of the Solid Rock Baptist Church. Robbie was a joy to all who knew her. She had an infectious laugh and loved to help others. She will be greatly missed.

Myra Mahle of LaFayette died Saturday, Nov. 26, 2011. She was 54.

Elliott Warn Morgan, 39, Rock Spring

Elliott Warn Morgan of Rock Spring died Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2011. He was 39. He was born in Chattanooga on January 9, 1972. He was of the Baptist faith, worked as a mechanic and enjoyed racing and working on old cars. He was preceded in death by his mother, Lillian Anne Morgan.

Benny McBryar, 60, Hixson, Tenn.

Benny McBryar of Hixson died Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2011 at his residence. He was 60. He was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga and Lookout Valley area. He was a one-time member of the Chamberlain Memorial Baptist Church where he served as Sunday school teacher and choir member and was currently a member of the Philadelphia Baptist Church. He was owner and operator of McBryar Brothers Construction. His passions in life were his family, friends, working and fishing. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Carrie McBryar; two brothers, L.A. and Andrew McBryar; and sister, Juanita McBryar.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Susan McBryar; son and daughter-in-law, Brad and Lee Ann McBryar of Chattanooga; four brothers, Homer McBryar of Chattanooga, Roy McBryar of Cottonwood, Ala., Clyde McBryar of Chattanooga, and J.R. McBryar of Chattanooga; two sisters, Annita Hicks of Chattanooga and Freida Rosenbaum of Harrison; granddaughter, Ava McBryar of Chattanooga; and several nieces and nephews.

Ellen Louise Cox Sherrill, 73, Chickamauga

Ellen Louise Cox Sherrill of Chickamauga died Sunday, Nov. 20, 2011, at her residence.

She had been a resident of the north Georgia area for 45 years and was of the Christian faith. Mrs. Sherrill retired from the communications industry after several years of service.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Margaret Risner Cox, and husband, John Sullivan Sherrill Jr.

Pluma (Pete) Wilbanks Tapp of Chickamauga died Sunday, Nov. 27, 2011, at her home.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Tapp; sisters, Effie Smith, Bessie Weaver, Amy Hankins, Irene Crane and Jennie Wilhoite; brothers, Willie, Grady, Jake, Arthur, Raymond, Emmett Wilbanks.

Survivors include a daughter, Robbie Tapp of Chickamauga; sister-in-law, Daisy Wilbanks of LaFayette; caregiver, friend and family member, June Wooten; and several nieces and nephews.

Edward Samuel Teague, 85, Rossville

Edward Samuel Teague of Rossville, known to his family as Pop, died Sunday, Nov. 20, 2011, surrounded by his family after a lengthy illness. He was 85.

Pop served in the European Theatre with the U. S. Army during World War II, reaching Hitler’s Eagles Nest toward the end of the war. After returning to the United States, he worked as a mechanic for both Chattanooga Garage and Cherokee Barnes Rhodes. Pop was a longtime member of the Calvary Assembly of God.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Connie Darlene Phillips; son, Michael Alan Teague; brothers, Sevier Teague and Roy Teague; sister, Eunice Summerhill.

Survivors include wife, Claudine Rogers Teague; daughter, Tracey (Tom) Reed; son-in-law, Randy Phillips brother, Ulyss Teague; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

William Bedford Shrader, 87, Rossville

William Bedford Shrader of Rossville died Nov. 20, 2011. He was 87.

He had lived in the north Georgia area for most of his life and was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church. He was also an Army Veteran having served during WWII, an ordained Deacon and retired from American Freight Lines in 1976. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Arnest Lee Hicks Shrader.

Survivors include his two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Deborah Shrader of Lilburn, Leslie and Jackie Shrader of Rock Spring; daughter, Bernitta Shrader of Rossville; brother, Luther Shrader of Trenton; seven grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Lottie Pharr Potter of Rossville died Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2011. She was 91. She had lived most of her life in the Chattanooga and Rossville area where she was a member of the Crossing Church, formerly East Ridge Church of God. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Mack A. Potter; son, Dennis C. Hill; parents, F.C. and Dora Pharr; brothers, Earl, Ed, Elmer, and Herman Pharr; and sisters, Hazel Moore and Nell Ward.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Wanda Potter of Chattanooga and Terry and Pat Potter of Rossville; daughter-in-law, Carolyn Hill Cross of East Ridge; sister, Betty Wilson of Rossville; two brothers, Leonard Pharr of Chattanooga and Connie Pharr of Ft. James “Jay” Walter, 66, Rossville

James “Jay” Walter of Rossville died Friday, Nov. 18, 2011 at a local hospital. He was 66. He was a native of New Jersey, had lived many years in Tampa, Fla., and had lived in Rossville since 1992. He was a member of the VFW Post 3679 and the American Legion in Tampa. He was a United States Navy veteran having served in Vietnam. He retired in 2007 from Auto Zone with 15 years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

Survivors include his wife, Inez Walter; sons, Jamey Walter of Tampa, Fla. and David Rabon of Pensacola, Fla.; daughters, Linda Rose of Rossville, Sarah Parker of Kingston, Tenn. and Denese Forrkio of Maryland; brother, Les Walter of Florida; thirteen grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Herman Charles Gurley, 81, East Ridge

Herman Charles Gurley of East Ridge, Tenn., died Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011, in a local hospital. He was 81.

He was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area and was retired from Colonial Bakery. Mr. Gurley was a member of Bible Way Baptist Church and was preceded in death by his infant son, James.

Dorothea “Dot” Mason, 84, Ringgold

Dorothea “Dot” Mason of Ringgold, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2011. She was 84.

She was a lifelong resident of north Georgia and member of Ringgold United Methodist Church. Dot was a member of the F.O.B. Sunday school class and the church quilting group. She was a loving wife and mother and will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, George M. Mason, and parents James and Louise Wilson.

Survivors include her daughter, Sharon (Larry) Eaton; sons, Dennis (Sue) Mason and Tim (Carol) Mason; sister, Awilda (Junior) Rogers, all of Ringgold; grandchildren, Lorrie (Tommy) Satterfield, Robert (Wendy) Eaton, Rachel and Sarah Mason;great-grandson, Mason Satterfield, and several nieces and nephews.

Billy L. Jackson, 77, Chickamauga

Billy L. Jackson of Athens, Ga., died Saturday, Nov.26, 2011. He was 77.

He grew up in and was a longtime resident of Chickamauga. Billy drove a truck for 42 years for Air Liquide in Chattanooga, Tenn. He loved driving and meeting people. He enjoyed tailgating in Athens and visiting local restaurants to eat and listen to music. Billy was a member of Chapelwood United Methodist Church in Athens. He was a 50-year Mason and a member of the Crawfish Springs Masonic Lodge F&AM #300.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lillian Jackson Bergman and Harold Jackson; sister, Jacqueline Burrows, and a brother: Aldean Jackson.

June Webb, 81, Rossville

June Webb of Rossville died Friday, Nov. 18, 2011. She was 81.

She was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga and north Georgia areas and was a member of Center Point Baptist Church. She was previously employed with Red Food Store for many years and was a devoted wife and aunt who will be sadly missed by all that knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George A. and Nell N. Cooke; husband, Robert E. Webb; and brother, Edward A. Cooke.

Survivors include her nephew and spouse, Ronald (Betty) Cooke of Rossville; and several great nephews and great great nephews.

Bennie Lloyd Scott Sr. of LaFayette died Monday, Nov. 14, 2011. He was 76.

He was a member of the Waterville Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by parents, T.R. Scott and Lassie Mae Green Scott; son, Gerard Scott, and brothers, James and Tom Scott.

Maurice Daniel Chaffin of Ringgold died Monday, Nov. 14, 2011. He was 81.

A native of Monticello, he has lived in the Ringgold area for the past 17 months and was formerly of Jacksonville, Fla., where he lived for 45 years. He was a retired employee of W & O Supply in Jacksonville, Fla., where he worked in sales, a veteran of the U.S. Navy where he served during the Korean War and was a member of Murray Hill Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Inez Pamela Chaffin; parents, Morris and Hardy Mae Stephens Chaffin, and sister, Betty Coley.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Melanie and Willis Callaway of Ringgold; son, Marcus Fielding Chaffin of Jacksonville, Fla.; six grandchildren, Laura Beaty Callaway, Daniel Gaines Callaway, Chase Brinson Callaway (Sarah Moore), Thebaut Fielding Chaffin and Susan Kirby Chaffin, and nieces and nephews.

Edward Allan Hope Sr., 64, Ringgold

Mr. Edward Allan Hope Sr. of Ringgold died Sunday, Nov. 13, 2011 at the Alvin C. York Medical Center in Murfreesboro, Tenn. He was 64.

He was born Aug. 26, 1947, in Chattanooga, Tenn., son of the late Ralph and Elizabeth Marion Hope and the husband of Bonnie Hawthorne Hope. He was a diesel mechanic for a bakery and a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam conflict.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Hawthorne Hope; sons, Gene Hope of Cleveland and Ed Hope of Chattanooga, and brothers, Roger Hope and Ronnie Hope, both of Chattanooga.

James William Nation, 78, Rock Spring

James “Jim” William Nation of Rock Spring died Nov. 15, 2011 after a six-year battle with cancer. He was 78.

He was born in Chickamauga to the late William Burl and Nora Broome Nation. He was retired after forty years in the transportation industry as a cross-country truck driver, owner-operator and mechanic, service manager for various companies, driver trainer and tour bus driver. He was a talented woodworking craftsman, skilled auto mechanic and a multi-instrumentalist musician who loved bluegrass music. He played music with his son, with many friends and as a member of the Deep River Boys band. He attended First Baptist Church of LaFayette and was a member of the Pope-Cochran Sunday school class. He was a member of Crawfish Springs Masonic Lodge F&AM #300, a Mason for 55 years and was Mason of the Year in 2010. His preceded in death by his parents; and by his son-in-law, Brian Broussard of Denham Springs, La.

Survivors include his wife of fifty nine years, Nancy Shaver Nation of Chickamauga; son and daughter-in-law, Rev. Otha Grant Rainey Parrish, 87, Chickamauga

Otha Grant Rainey Parrish age of Chickamauga died Thursday, Nov. 17, 2011. She was 87.

She was born in Marshall County, Ala., to the late Rev. James Crawford and Zellie Rebecca Ledford Rainey. She was of the Holiness Faith and enjoyed crocheting, sewing and trying new recipes. She had worked as a sitter with homebound patients and previously worked at O.B. Andrews, Crystal Springs Bleachery and Standard Coosa Thatcher.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jess William Parrish; daughter, Wanda Faye Parrish; five sisters and one brother.
