Venna Young Livingston, 91, Rossville

Venna Young Livingston of Rossville died Sunday, July 8, 2012, in a local health care facility. She was 91.

She had been a resident of Valley Head, Ala., for 42 years before moving to north Georgia. She was a member of Bible Way Baptist Church, but previously had been a longtime member of Valley Head United Methodist Church in Valley Head, Ala. She was preceded in death by her parents, W. B. and Lillie McCollum Young; husband, Gordon Wade Livingston; grandson, Wade Mercer; brother, Tom Young; sisters, Zula Waddell and Madge Sparks.

Survivors include her daughters, Sue (Sam) Mosley, of Loganville, Marilyn Mercer, of Ringgold; brother Woodrow Young, of Gadsden, Ala.; grandchildren, Carmen (James) Reed, Jamie (Rob) Smith, Ben Mosley, and Suzanne (Adam) Reid; six great-granddaughters; several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services: Wednesday, July 11, at 11 a.m.(CST) in Mt. View Memory Gardens, Rainsville, Ala. Visitation: from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Betty Jean Snider, 75, Chickamauga

Betty Jean Snider of Chickamauga died Tuesday, July 10, 2012. She was 75.

She was a lifelong resident of north Georgia and was of the Christian faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Snider; parents, Jess and Frances Tapp Helton; son, L. Thomas (Tommy) Snider; sisters, Gerry Ann Bonner, Amie Lou Middleton and Mamie Sue Wheeler; and grandchildren, Holly Marie Snider and Thomas Howard Oswalt.

Survivors include her children, Betty Joyce Shepherd (Curtis) of Erwin, Ky., and Lottie Marie Cherry (Wayne Hickman) of Chickamauga; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; special niece, Winnie Ellis Schmidt; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside service: Friday, July 13, at 2:30 p.m., at Chattanooga National Cemetery, with Bro. Tim Turnipseed officiating. Visitation: Friday, July 13, from 11 a.m. until leaving for the cemetery.

George Frank Stanfield, 81, Chickamauga

George Frank Stanfield of Chickamauga died Tuesday, July 10, 2012. He was 81.

He was born in Trion to the late Samuel C. and Bessie Mae Acrey Stanfield. He served his country in the U.S. Army where he received the Korean Service Medal with one bronze star, Germany Occupation Medal and the National Defense Medal. After his service time he worked as a truck driver and his last employment was with Smith Transport in Chattanooga, Tenn. He was of the Lutheran faith and enjoyed riding motorcycles and camping. He was a member of the Scenic City Cruisers of Chattanooga where he enjoyed riding his Hondas. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, L.D. Stanfield, and sisters, Nurine Ward, Wilma Lee Tate, and Kizzie Mae Lively.

Survivors include his wife of fifty-eight years, George Ann Kummers Stanfield; son and daughter-in-law, Donnie Gene and Rhonda Stanfield; grandchildren, Tony and Meagan Stanfield all of Chickamauga; sister: Yvonne Dunwoody of LaFayette; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services: Saturday, July 14, at 2 p.m., with Chaplain Pat Davis officiating. Burial: Lakewood Memorial Gardens-South. Visitation: Friday, July 13, from 7-9 p.m., and Saturday morning prior to the service.

Veda Marie Geren Cooper, 84, Chattanooga

Veda Marie Geren Cooper of Chattanooga died Tuesday, July 10, 2012. She was 84.

She was born in Anderson, Tenn., to the late Harry and Nellie Cates. She was employed by Willware and Buster Brown for many years. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Gerald Cates, Aubry Cates, Junior “C.L.” Cates, and William Cates; sisters, Margaret Rushing, and Vera Collis.

Survivors include her son, David (Laura) Geren; grandson, David (Carolina) Geren; granddaughters, Vienne and Arianne Geren; brother, James (Brenda) Cates; and several nieces and nephews.

Richard Palmer, 62, Rossville

Richard “Rick” Palmer of Rossville died Wednesday, July 11, 2012. He was 62.

He was a lifelong resident of Rossville and was of the Christian faith. He enjoyed playing gospel music on his guitar with his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Alma Ruth Palmer, and sister, Norma Jean Forrester.

Survivors include his loving fiancé, Joan Abbott; sister, Wanda Click; three children, six grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Bill Edgar Veal, Sr., 67, Lookout Mountain

Bill Edgar Veal, Sr. of Lookout Mountain, died Thursday, July 5, 2012. He was 67.

He was a lifelong resident of Lookout Mountain and was of the Christian faith. He was a master at working on small engines and was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother who will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Ollie Kay Veal; son, Jeffrey Paul Veal; sister, Inez Castro; and brothers, James Raily and James Veal.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Gail Cochran Veal; children, Billy (Sandi) Veal, Jr., Lisa Veal, both of Lookout Mountain, and Matthew (Tammy) Veal of Slygo; sisters, Ruby Butler, Bernice Veal, Jessie Brown, and Mary Ellen Wilks; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Virginia Stoker Gleffe, 81, LaFayette

Mrs. Virginia Stoker Gleffe of LaFayette died Thursday July 5, 2012. She was 81.

Survivors include her daughters, Karen Stansell, of LaFayette, Geneva Thompson, of Rome; sons, Benny Ray and Danny Marks, of LaFayette; sister, Mary Francis Hicks, of Rome; five grandchildren, several great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Wade M. Masterson, 88, Rossville

Wade M. Masterson of Rossville died Friday, July 6, 2012. He was 88.

He was born in Soddy, Tenn. to the late Granville and Martha Masterson. He served in the United States Army during WWII where he served in the pacific with the Amphibious Division, and later retired from Combustion after 38 years of service as a cost accountant. He was of the Baptist faith. He enjoyed building and racing cars for many years at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip. He was an avid NASCAR fan. After his retirement he enjoyed riding his Gold Wing motorcycle. He will be best remembered for his simple lifestyle and quiet demeanor. He was a very thoughtful, kind, faithful father and grandfather who generously provided for his family.

He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Linda Masterson Bailey; and siblings, Otis Weaver, Gene Webster and Sproul Masterson.

Survivors include his children, Roy (Kay) Masterson of Chattanooga and Gary (Debi) Masterson of Rossville; eight grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.

Graveside services: Monday, July 9, at 11 a.m. at Lakewood Memory Gardens-South with Pastor Mike Bower officiating. Visitation: Sunday, July 8, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. and prior to services Monday at the funeral home.

Randall Leon Yates, 47, Rossville

Randall Leon Yates of Rossville died July 6, 2012, with family by his side. He was 47.

He was born in Fort Oglethorpe to the late Lamar and Wilma Yates and was the youngest of five children. He was a 1983 graduate of Ringgold High School and attended Dalton State College. He loved spending time with his family, sports, computers, and ice cream sandwiches. He was a passionate fan of the Atlanta Falcons and Georgia Bulldogs and they will forever be a part of him.

He was also preceded in death by his sister, Wanda “JoJo” Tate.

Survivors include his loving wife of 25 years, Annette Yates; son, Chris (Jamie) Yates; sister, Pamela Gentry and family; brother, Don Yates and family; sister, Dianna Sharp and family.

Funeral service: Monday, July 9, from 3-5 p.m. at the funeral home.

David Vernon Brown of Chattanooga died Friday, July 6, 2012, at his home. He was 56.

He was born in Chattanooga to the late Frank and Jamie Brown, and was of the Baptist faith.

David Ray Walker, 57, Chattanooga

David Ray Walker of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Saturday, July 7, 2012. He was 57.

He was born to the late Carl and Johnnie Walker in Chattanooga on July 13, 1954. He was a truck driver for Koch foods, and he enjoyed motorcycles, as well as singing and playing his guitar.

Survivors include his daughters, Angelia (Steven) Palmer of Rossville, and Lindsey (Colt) Dockery of Soddy Daisy; sons, David Walker Jr., of Chattanooga and Josh (Laura) Walker of Hixson; sisters, Patricia (Herman) Robbins, and Sue (Jerry) Bales; brothers, Bill (Markie) Walker, Gene (Rita) Walker, Jim Walker and Bob Walker; and six grandchildren.,

Betty Rose Wilson of Rossville died on Sunday, July 8, 2012. She was 86.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wiley Wilson, Jr., and two sons, Jimmy Kinsey and Daniel Wilson.

Survivors include her son, Roger Wilson and wife, Nadine; brothers, Leonard Pharr and Connie Pharr and wife, Velma; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Reese Martin, 5, Chattanooga

Reese Martin, of Chattanooga, ran into the arms of Jesus on Thursday, July 5, 2012, surrounded by his family. He was 5.

Reese, the beloved son of Barry and Regennia Martin, lived life to the fullest daily. He played hard, laughed often and loved completely. In his five years of life, he filled each day with his favorite things; toys, food, friends, girls and family. Trains, cars, fire trucks and balls were his favorite toys, Bruesters, Bones, Logans and Armondos were favorite restaurants. Seth, Max, Brandon and Andrew were his best friends. Maddie, Ms. Renee, Ashley, Laura and Dr. Cook were his girlfriends. His little brother, Riley was his shadow wanting to be just like his big brother. Reese had an infectious personality that drew people to him. He loved people and everyone who met him fell in love with him. He will be missed by all. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Wilma D. Martin; great-grandmothers, Ruth Davis and Polly Hood and beloved dog, Teddy.

Rev. Harold Morris Camp of Fort Oglethorpe died Thursday, July 5, 2012. He was 79.

He was born in Keota, Okla., to the late Claude and Hester Camp. He was a well-known television repairman and pastored at Jones Memorial Baptist Church, and was a member of Temple Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Debbie Ann Camp; granddaughter, Amber Gitgood; and brother, Doyle Camp.

Survivors include his loving wife of 59 years, Patricia Camp; children, Connie (Phil) Daniels of Fort Oglethorpe, Randy (Lisa) Camp of Ringgold, Teresa (Skip) Boyd of Birchwood, Tenn.; 9 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Martha Garland Newcom of Ringgold died Wednesday, July 4, 2012. She was 81.

She was a lifelong resident of Fort Oglethorpe, and a member of the Fort Oglethorpe Church of Christ. She worked at Hutcheson Medical Center in the Pathology Department for over thirty years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe M. Newcom; daughter, Peggy Jo Newcom; brother, Raymond Garland.

Survivors include her daughter, Pennie (Randy) Stone of Ringgold; grandchildren, Adam Stone of Nashville, Nathaniel Stone of Ringgold; five great-grandchildren.

Mary Harris Smith of Rossville, died Friday, July 6, 2012, in a local health care facility. She was 102.

She was born March 9, 1910, in South Pittsburg, Tenn., to the late Bud and Hattie Harris. She was the oldest member of Cloud Spring Baptist Church where she had been a member for 86 years. She was preceded in death by her husband of over 55 years, Jesse Smith; siblings, Mose, Bob and Dorothy Harris and Gennie Lowe.

Survivors include her son, Al (Hellen) Smith; grandson, Jay Smith; several nieces and nephews.

William Allen “Lawrence” Bruce of LaFayette, died Thursday, July 5, 2012. He was 85.

He was born to the late Ross and Ruby Bruce in LaFayette on June 3, 1927. He was a member and Deacon of Ridgeway Baptist Church, retired from Auto Custom Carpet and also worked for Barwick Mills for 25 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Justin Bruce.

Survivors include his loving wife, Faye Bruce of LaFayette; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sheila and Fred Hamala of Liberty, S.C., Pamela and Dr. Paul Ballinger of LaFayette; three sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Penny Bruce, David and Nancy Bruce, Brent and Robin Bruce, all of LaFayette; sister and brother-in-law, Imogene and Herbert Broyles of Trion; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Lewis and Brenda Bruce of Trion, Leo and Awanda Bruce of LaFayette; eleven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Ransom E. Jones of Ringgold, died on Sunday, July 1, 2012, at his residence. He was 53.

He attended Brainerd Presbyterian Church and loved to play music, especially his guitar. Ransom worked as VP of Information Technology for PHCG, Inc. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Wesley and Marie Jones and John and Julia Jones.

Newell Henry Crook, Jr., 67, Chickamauga

Newell Henry “Skip” Crook, Jr. of Chickamauga died Wednesday, July 4, 2012. He was 67.

He had lived in the north Georgia area for most of his life and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Chattanooga Valley and was previously employed with Niagra LaSalle for more than 17 years. He was an Army Veteran having served during the Vietnam War and had coached youth soccer for more than 20 years and was also active in working with the Boys Scouts of America. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, who will be greatly missed by all that knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Newell and Mary Crook, Sr. and daughter, Sarah Crook.

Survivors include his loving wife of more than 35 years, Vicki Crook of Chickamauga; seven children, Deana Wallace of Ringgold, Rachael Crook of Chickamauga, James Thomas of East Ridge, Tenn., Brad Crook of Ringgold, Damon Thomas of Fort Oglethorpe, Stephen Crook of East Ridge, Tenn., and Caleb Crook of Riverton, Utah; two sisters; seven brothers; thirteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service: Monday, July 9, at noon in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Chattanooga Valley with Bishop Justin Fawson officiating. Burial: Chattanooga National Cemetery. Visitation: Saturday, July 7, after 5 p.m. and Sunday from 2-9 p.m.

James Jones, Jr., 81, Fort Oglethorpe

James Jones, Jr., of Fort Oglethorpe, died Monday, July 2, 2012, in a local hospital. He was 81.

He had been a resident of Fort Oglethorpe for 50 years. He was a truck driver for more than 50 years starting as a milkman home delivery service. He also worked for Southwest Motor Freight, West Point Pepperell, and CTI and later was the owner and operator of his own rig. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Jesse Wilson Jones; wife, Betty Sue Hunt Jones; daughter, Linda Sue Jones; brother, Herbert Jones; sisters, Ruth Manning, Thelma Morgan and Katherine Hicks.

Survivors include his sons, Ken Jones of Ringgold, Mike Jones of Panama City Beach, Fla.; daughter, Beverly Bearden, and son-in-law, Dale of Rossville; sister, Pat Wilson of Chattanooga; grandchild, Lindsay Bearden.

Funeral services: Friday, July 6, at 2:30 p.m., in the funeral home chapel. Burial: Hamilton Memorial Gardens with Minister Mike Gurganus officiating. Visitation: Thursday, July 5, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Herman Wells, 57, LaFayette

Herman “Shorty” Wells of LaFayette died Friday, June 29, 2012. He was 57.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman Hix Wells, and Ollie Lee White Wells; brother, John wells, Sr.; and sister, Mary Cricket Sizemore.

Survivors include his daughters, Misty (Timothy) Sprayberry of Cummings, and Tamara (Derek) Glenn; son, Jonathan Hawkins of Chatsworth; mother of his children, Vickie Wells Allen; sisters, Inez Rowland of Rome, Martha (Donnie) Arrington of Adairsville, and Sherry Long of Rome; brothers, Jimmy (Karla) Wells of Ellijay, and Chigger (Audrey) Wells of LaFayette; grandchildren, Mary and Rebekah Glenn, Keith Campbell, and Logan Sprayberry; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service: Monday, July 2, at 4 p.m., from the House of Prayer Baptist Church. Service by Bros. Johnboy Wells and Bobby Sprayberry. Burial: White Cemetery.

Alpina Smith Johnson, 90, LaFayette

Mrs. Alpina Smith Johnson of LaFayette died Sunday July 1, 2012. She was 90.

She was a member of Corinth Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents Thomas and Myrtle Smith; two children, Dale and Lennis Johnson; brothers, Oscar (Syrupy) Smith, Clarence (Dob) Smith, Wallis Smith, Cecil Smith; two son-in-laws, Linus McWhorter and Tommy Fickey; husband Edgar Johnson; grandsons, Christopher Johnson and Wayne Fickey.

Survivors include daughters, Margaret McWhorter, Pete Fickey, Pat (Harry) Scott, all of LaFayette, Polly (Donnie) Parrish of Chickamauga, Starr House of Noble; sons, Joe (Nell) Johnson of Goldthwaite, Texas, Leon (Juanita) Johnson of LaFayette, Leland (Pam) Johnson of Chickamauga, Steve Johnson of LaFayette; two sisters-in-laws, Rosie Smith and Judy Smith; life-time friend Edith Russell; twenty-four grandchildren, forty-four great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service: Tuesday, July 3, at 11 a.m., at Corinth Baptist Church. Service conducted by Revs. Steve Stanfield, Jimmy Weaver and Wayne Wallin. Burial: Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation: Monday, July 2, from 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Patsy Humphrey, 68, Trion

Patsy Humphrey, of Trion died Friday, June 29, 2012. She was 68.

She was a member of The Old Way Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Benny Humphrey; daughters, Tammy Jo Green of Rock Spring, and Jacqueline Robertson; son, Benny Lynns Humphrey; sister, Opal Edwards, all of LaFayette; nine grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, several step-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Angela Beth Hendricks, 47, Bryant, Ala.

Angela Beth Hendricks of Bryant, Ala., died Saturday, June 30, 2012. She was 47.

She had lived most of her life in the Chattanooga area and was a member of Long Island Baptist Church in Bryant, Ala. She had worked in the healthcare industry for most of her life and was a devoted sister, wife and mother who will be greatly missed by all that knew her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Danny and Pat Harden.

Survivors include her loving husband of more than 28 years, Kenneth Hendricks; three children, Dakota, Michelle and Dustin Hendricks, all of Bryant, Ala.; two brothers, Tim Harden and Greg Harden, both of Chattanooga, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service: Tuesday, July 3, at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. David Marona officiating. Burial: Lakewood South Memory Gardens. Visitation: Monday, July 2, after 5 p.m. and prior to the service on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Beverly Shaver Dodd, 65, Chattanooga

Beverly Shaver Dodd of Chattanooga died Thursday, June 28, 2012, at a local hospital. She was 65.

She was a native of Rossville and had lived in Chattanooga for the past 20 years. She had been employed with Chattanooga State for the past 16 years where she worked in financial aid and was currently in the child care center. Her passions in life were her grandson, Garrett, her family, and her work with the children at Chattanooga State. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted Dodd; and her parents, Raymond and Rena Shaver.

Survivors include her son, Tom Dodd of Chattanooga; daughter, Tina Harrison of Ooltewah; three brothers, Rick Shaver of New York, Ron Shaver of Rossville, and Wesley Shaver of Atlanta; sister, Sandra Cooper of Ooltewah; grandson, Garrett Scott Dodd; several nieces and nephews; and her dog, Zack.

Funeral services: Monday, July 2, at 2 p.m., in the funeral home chapel with Rev. David Pickard officiating. Burial: Tennessee-Georgia Memorial Park.

Visitation: Sunday, July 1, from 4-8 p.m., and Monday from noon until the funeral hour at the funeral home.

Florence Roberts Phillips, 100, Chattanooga

Florence Roberts Phillips of Chattanooga and formerly of Newport News, Va., died June 29, 2012. She was 100. She was the wife of the late Lt. Col. Bruce Phillips and the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Roberts. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Carrie Roberts and Sue Hopkins; and brother, Eldon Roberts.

Survivors include her son, Bruce (Ellen) Phillips of Ooltewah; niece, Vikkey (Keith) Anderson of Arlington, Va.; nephew, Bob (Sally) Hopkins of Martinsville, Va.; granddaughter, Beth (Stewart) Cook of Littlestown, Pa.; six great-grandchildren; three great nieces; one great nephew; and goddaughter, Jean (Jack) Lynch of Yorktown, Va.

Memorial service and burial will be held at a later date in Newport News, Va.
