Oakwood Baptist Church is sponsoring Easter in the Park, a community-wide Easter service taking place at the Chickamauga Battlefield Park on Easter Sunday morning.
This is the fifth year for the celebration. Over the past four years close to 20,000 people have attended. About 9,000 people came last year.
“People have really come to expect this as part of their tradition,” media director Bobby Daniels said.
Daniels said he expects about 9,000 people again this year if the weather holds up.
“The weather plays an effect over who’s going to go,” he said.
If the weather turns bad, Oakwood Baptist will arrange for another venue. An announcement will be posted on the church’s website.
Participants are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs to set up in the grass around the Wilder Tower.
There will be live music by performers from the three Oakwood Baptist campuses, which are located on Oak-wood Street in Chickamauga, in Gateway Mall in Fort Oglethorpe, and on Germantown Road in East Ridge, Tenn. The music portion will last about an hour.
Easter in the Park is on Sunday, April 4, from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. near Wilder Tower inside Chickamauga Battlefield Park. For more information, contact Oakwood Baptist Church at 706-375-5760 or visit
www.oakwoodbc.org.
Pastor Darrell Henry of Oakwood Baptist Church will give the Easter message, which will last the remaining thirty minutes.
Dress for the event is casual.
Parking is available in the recreation field next to the field where Wilder Tower is located. Daniels said signs and traffic directors will help participants find parking.
